Short answer
A helpful way to think about it
Grief is a human response to losing an important person or part of life. It does not have to follow linear stages; feelings may come in waves and everyone’s rhythm can differ.
What are loss and grief?
Grief can follow not only a death but also the end of a relationship, loss of work or health, relocation or a changed way of life. The meaning of the bond, culture and circumstances shape the process.
How might it feel and what may accompany it?
Longing, sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, fatigue or sometimes relief may occur. The order and intensity of feelings can change; there is no single correct way to grieve.
How can daily life be affected?
Sleep, appetite, concentration, social contact and responsibilities may be difficult for a time. Being able to return to everyday activities on some days does not lessen the importance of the loss.
What may help?
Caring for basic needs, talking with trusted people, rituals of remembrance and small daily goals may help. Grief does not need to be accelerated or fitted to a timetable.
A sign to consider support
When might support be worth considering?
Professional support is important if grief does not become less intense over time, returning to daily life remains markedly difficult or safety-related thoughts arise.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Do stages of grief occur in order?
No. Not every stage is experienced, and emotions do not have to follow a fixed sequence.
How long does grief last?
There is no single duration. The meaning of the loss, circumstances and available support shape its rhythm.
Do better days mean I have forgotten the loss?
No. Grief and participation in life can coexist.
