Short answer

A helpful way to think about it

A first session is usually devoted to understanding what brings you to therapy, your expectations and life context. You do not have to share everything at once; you have the right to ask questions and consider the therapist’s way of working.

Where can understanding begin?

A single symptom or difficult day does not in itself indicate a mental health diagnosis. How long the experience lasts, when it intensifies and how it affects daily life provide a more meaningful overall picture.

Asking yourself “What is this situation narrowing in my life, what do I need, and what support is available to me?” can offer a calm starting point. This text does not replace personal assessment or therapy.

A sign to consider support

When might support be worth considering?

If you cannot obtain clear information about a therapist’s training, confidentiality, fees and cancellation terms, it is reasonable to ask and seek another professional opinion.
