Short answer

A helpful way to think about it

Anxiety before an exam is common, and a certain level of arousal can support attention. When very intense, it may affect thinking, sleep, study routines and performance and should be considered in the person’s context.

What is test anxiety?

Test anxiety is an emotional, cognitive and physical response associated with evaluation and performance expectations. It is not in itself a sign of failure or inadequacy.

How might it feel and what may accompany it?

Fear of going blank, strong physical arousal, self-critical thoughts, sleep difficulties and postponing study may occur. Perfectionism and fear of mistakes can increase pressure.

How can daily life be affected?

It may lead to delayed study, overworking, difficulty resting, social withdrawal or avoiding the exam. Anxiety can affect the preparation period as well as the exam itself.

What may help?

Realistic goals, short study blocks, regular sleep, gradual familiarity with exam conditions and separating performance from personal worth may help. No method guarantees success.

A sign to consider support

When might support be worth considering?

Psychological support or educational counselling may be considered if anxiety clearly affects study routines, sleep or exam participation and avoidance or self-criticism is increasing.

Common questions

Can some anxiety help performance?

Moderate arousal may support attention for some people, but the same level is not useful for everyone.

Does studying all night reduce anxiety?

Giving up sleep can impair attention and memory. A sustainable plan is generally more balanced.

Can I get support for test anxiety?

Yes. Depending on the difficulty, psychological support, school counselling or educational counselling may be considered.
